The Michigan Tech Center for Water and Society (MTCWS) was established in June of 2005 under the Sustainable Futures Institute (SFI) to provide the multidisciplinary perspectives and tools to manage water-related problems of local, regional, and international interest. MTCWS is a “virtual” Research Center. By virtual, we mean that the MTCWS will not occupy physical space, but will be a consortium of people at Michigan Tech whose focal point is water-related activities.
In 2008, the Invasive Species Research Institute (ISRI) was founded at Algoma University to undertake basic and applied research on terrestrial invasive forest pests, and to establish an international network of colleagues interested in the detection, prevention and management of invasive species.
The vision of a group of researchers, legislators, and community members, the Natural Resources Research Institute opened its doors in 1985 to study the economic impact and sustainability of Minnesota’s minerals, forest products, peat, biomass, and water-related industries.
Minnesota has an abundance of natural resources, and it is our responsibility to protect the environment for future generations, as well as to create new economic opportunities. Through its research, NRRI has been an active participant in revitalizing both areas.

The Audubon Center of the North Woods is a private, non-profit residential environmental learning center (RELC), a wildlife rehabilitation facility, and conference & retreat center nestled on the shores of Grindstone Lake near Sandstone, MN in east-central Minnesota.

Previously known as Lake Superior Center, the Great Lakes Aquarium has been located on the Duluth Waterfront since 2000. It is a mostly freshwater aquarium and features animals and habitats found within the Great Lakes Basin. The Aquarium also houses animals from other fresh water ecosystems such as the Amazon River.
The Great Lakes Aquarium provides on-site and outreach educational programming to learners of all ages. Daily interpretive programs give guests the opportunity to learn more about resident animals while watching them eat, play or interact with our staff.
Teaching Traditional Northern Crafts on the harbor in Grand Marais, Minnesota
Traditional crafts of the northern hemisphere, combined with the stories and rich cultural history of its indigenous people, are the medium for providing creative and meaningful experiences for individuals, families and groups at the North House Folk School. Tucked on the harbor in Grand Marais, the school offers year-round classes exploring a variety of traditional northern crafts - from boat building to timber framing, basket making to bread baking, sailing to fiber arts.
