This is the place where students, teachers, families and fellow explores will post their work, discussion question answers and connect with the expedition team as they travel around the Lake.
Hey! What you guys are doing is absolutely fantastic. We just have a couple questions to ask you. How much is your adventure costing you? And do you carry all your supplies with you or do you have to stop at places and get them?
Hi, there i wish you all a great journey along lake superior. But i have some questions to ask you like are your family’s scared about you two doing this trip, or like do you plain on hiking along the trails thats been set up along superior, because i’ve been hiking on the superior with my school and i would say you guys should try out some of the trails there great. i would also love to know what you find out about what’s been going on with our fresh drinking water source. which leaves me to ask how did this trip come about, meaning what made you want to do this
Those are very good questions! The expedition right now has a budget at around 30,000 for Mike and Kate and their support crew. This includes the support vehicles, campsite, equipment, gear, food, etc. Most of supplies are carried in the Sag wagon, an RV that I am driving, but because we do go through towns we are also able to get supplies we run out of or find that we need.
This journey around the lake started with a dream, a dream to make the world a better place for future generations. For us it came to our love of lakes and hiking and concern for the future. We were talking about retirement and thinking about what our legacy to our grandchildren will be. We want to encourage everyone to protect especially all of the basic things we all need: water, air, the land that gives us food, etc, & to encourage others to exercise and take care of your health and to dream and work to accomplish those dreams. It doesn’t matter what your age is anyone can follow a dream, explore, exercise and learn new things about the world around us.
As we were hiking along the shore we came across the gravesite for Max a dog who lived along the shore of Lake Superior and were moved by this wonderful memorial to him. Last year we lost our dog Sig and this really touched us to find a connection through the love our dogs and the memories we cherish of them.
Thank you. Yes, our families are concerned for our safety and the communication challenges involved in the expedition. Together with our support team we are working to make it as safe as possible. We will be walking mostly beaches: sand, clay and rocky, through the forest if it reaches to the shore, trails where we can find them, and roads. In some areas where bridges are being replaced we will be traveling by canoe along the shore. We are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed hiking on the trails along the lake, keep exploring and share what you see and find with us!
This trip came about from a dream to play a part in protecting Lake Superior, a lake we love, and fresh water for our grandchildren and all future generations. We as grandparents want to help make the world a better place for those who come after us. Fresh water is one the most precious resources we have. We only have one Earth, one home and we need to take care of it so we can have good lives, but more importantly so others can too. Through the expedition we want to collect research that will better help us understand the condition of Lake Superior, to teach others what we learn, about things we can to protect fresh water and to encourage other to get out and explore the world around you. We can each make difference and our actions and the decisions we make are important.
We hope that we can get people to see the importance of water in their lives and the protection of this precious resource for the future.
This expedition is dedicated to the memory of Matthew Link, Ogima Benisi Kwe, and the spirit of the land – and all future generations who will live, work and play around the great lake known as Lake Superior.
Matthew Link is the son of Mike – a seasoned forest ranger and kayaker, who passed on doing what he loved in New Zealand. He is with us on every adventure just as our other children and grandchildren are in our thoughts everyday.
Ogima Benisi Kwe, Chief Bird Woman, is Mike’s great great grandmother. She was a Midewiwin, an Ojibwe shaman, from the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation.
We hope we inspire you to explore more in your backyard or in far off places.
This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I enjoy seeing websites that understand the value of providing a prime resource for free. I truly loved reading your post. Thanks!
Here are some basic questions to ponder: Post your answers to the expedition team!
How much water does Lake Superior hold?
How long is the shoreline of Lake Superior?
What would happen if Lake Superior dried up? Who would it affect?
How much fresh water is available for all living things on Earth?
Earth is the water planet. How much water is fresh water & how much is salt water?
Name one Lake in the world that has more water volume than Lake Superior. Hint: This lake has a layer of salt water at the bottom with fresh water on top.
