Hey, where's the data and information on Lake Superior?

When the expedition is under way, the wealth of data collected on characteristics such as flora, fauna, and water quality to provide a baseline for future scientific studies will be uploaded into a central database hosted on the Full Circle Website. While educational, scientific, and governmental institutions and other organizations affiliated with Full Circle will have access to the full range of collected data through a secure interface, a specific set will be made available to students, interested parties, and the general public in this section.

However, the expedition has not yet started, so it naturally goes that there is no data to browse yet. Keep checking back once the expedition is under way in the Summer of 2010!

Articles associated with Lake Superior and the Expedition will be published when the expedition is under way, and will continue to emerge long after the expedition is complete as researchers analyze and use the data over time to learn about the changes in Lake Superior and its communities, environment, and ecology. Some of these essays, articles and other publishings will also be posted here.

Many of us dream of completing one great adventure in our lives.  For some, it is a week-long paddle through Lake Superior Provincial Park, for others it is trekking through the mountains of Peru.  For Mike Link and Kate Crowley, it is walking “full circle” around Lake Superior. This undertaking is no small feat.  The total distance Mike and Kate will walk will be equal to travelling from Duluth, Minnesota, to Miami, Florida.  The journey...

This new version has been many months in the working. With less than a year to the hike, it is my great pleasure to present to you an entirely new face for Full Circle. The overall design and conception of the new website came unexpectedly. I had already been working on a new version of the website which was in many ways similiar to the old, and the lackluster appearance and performance saddened me. It just didn't feel vibrant, dynamic or intuitive enough. Disheartened, I visited Mike and Kate one day and followed them to the Audubon Center of...

Below normal temperatures in December and January have resulted in significant ice cover developing on Lake Superior. This false color satellite image allows for easier identification of ice and open water. The aqua colored areas on Lake Superior indicate ice cover, black areas indicate open water, and white areas indicate cloud cover. Bands of lake effect snow are evident forming over the open waters of eastern Lake Superior. Although there are scattered snow showers over parts of western Lake Superior, cloud cover is significantly less than over eastern Lake Superior....

My interests and views on water have been shaped by where I’ve lived, worked, and played. I grew up in suburban-like San Diego, a place with beautiful green landscaping surrounding newer and more numerous homes. It strikes me that, at the time, I wasn’t curious about the discrepancy between the amount of water consumed and the local rainfall (about 10 inches per year). But, it...

From the Lake Superior Center’s view on the St Louis River harbor through the lift bridge past canal park, Minnesota greets Lake Superior.  From the curve of the Duluth lakewalk past Lief Erickson Park, the rose gardens, and finally Lester River and the Seven Bridges road that crisscrosses the falls and canyons of the lakes first north shore river, we...
